Sixteen shortlisted artists have enamoured judges seeking a natural world-regarding “sense of discovery” in this new award, ranging from delicate drawings to extravagant colour capturing something of the complexity they convey.

“I am certain that Ruskin would be delighted by the breadth of vision and observation revealed by the shortlisted work.”
Ruskin was arguably the most revered art critic of the Victorian period, so the exhibition is in hallowed surroundings at his former Lake District home of Brantwood.
The winner, announced at the private view on September 7, will receive £1,000, a specially commissioned work made with oak from Ruskin’s native Wyre Forest and a placed in a major exhibition, Force of Nature: Picturing Ruskin’s Landscape, which opens at the Millennium Gallery in Sheffield in December.
- Open 10.30am-5pm. Admission £1.35-£6.95 (family ticket £8.60-£14.50).
