Whereas LS Lowry is perhaps most associated with scenes of work, or at least those on their way to and from the factory, this show takes a different tack. A Lowry Summer is dedicated to holidays, leisure activities and days off.
And it is arguable that paintings such as Lancashire Fair, Good Friday and Daisy Nook (on loan from the Government Art Collection) give the Manchester painter even more scope to bring his eye for detail to his panoramic scenes of humanity en masse.
Lowry was once branded a Sunday Painter, but the truth was that days off for this prolific artist must have been few and far between. As a full time clerk for the Pall Mall Property Company, his working hours were somewhat occupied, and yet he found time to paint every day.
With 240 works on display, this is an extensive show. Pictures are drawn from public and private collections as well as the Lowry’s own holdings. The painter gets his dues in the south with an overdue show at Tate Britain next year. So this Lowry Summer may be followed by another.
