Stunning Turner painting will usher in Margate's Turner Contemporary this April

A dramatic painting illustrating the power of both volcanoes and the artistic imagination will be the focus of the explosive curtain raiser at Margate’s Turner Contemporary when it opens in spring 2011.

Executed by the gallery’s namesake and regular Margate visitor, JMW Turner, The Eruption of the Soufriere Mountains in the Island of St. Vincent, 30th April 1812 will offer a dramatic focal point for a stylishly monikered group show called, Revealed: Turner Contemporary Opens.

Turner’s extraordinary but little-known painting, on loan from the Victoria Gallery and Museum at the University of Liverpool, will be accompanied by the work Daniel Buren, Russell Crotty, Teresita Fernandez, Douglas Gordon, Ellen Harvey and Conrad Shawcross, including three important new commissions.

The David Chipperfield designed contemporary art space, which is being hailed as one of the largest and most important spaces for art outside London, will open to the public on Saturday April 16 2011.
