Tate art is now available on iTunes.

The Tate Gallery has waded further into the world of mp3s and internet downloads by making hundreds of its video and audio files available for free on iTunes U, a dedicated area of the iTunes Store featuring educational content.

Media producers at Tate have already been making a range of content including films, interviews, podcasts and educational material available online via their website at tate.org.uk, but the partnership with iTunes promises to broaden both the scope of content and audience involved.

iTunes U, which is part of the iTunes Store, is billed by Apple as "the world's greatest collection of free educational media available to students, teachers, and lifelong learners." Tate will be joining a range of educational institutions in making their content available on the site, including Oxford and Cambridge Universities, the Open University and Stanford University.

More than 400 videos and audio files have been categorised by Tate to enable iPod users to go directly to their area of interest and browse thematically under artist, exhibition, Tate Voices, Tate Live, Tate IQ and guides for teachers.

Newly-produced projects will also be available, including a series of films that use social networking site Twitter to take audience questions directly to artists like David Hockney.

"Tate is delighted to come on board as part of iTunes U," said Will Gompertz, Director of Tate Media. "This is a first in the UK and we look forward to making our rich resources available to an even greater audience.

"In the world of new media nothing can be achieved alone and it is by working with exceptional companies such as Apple that enables Tate to use the internet to help fulfil its mission to make art available to all."

Tate audio and video downloads are located in the Beyond Campus section of iTunes U in the iTunes Store
