Exhibition: Agitprop! Project Space 11, Plymouth City Market until August 28 2010.

Agitprop, the synthesis of art, politics and agitation that had its genesis in 1930s Russia has been a regular visitor to the European art scene over the years.

The latest manifestation is at Plymouth’s Project Space 11, where Agitprop! a rolling exhibition of poster artwork by regional, national and international artists, is spilling out of the gallery and onto the walls of the city.

The group takes in a loose assortment of artists including the Saatchi-backed Simon Bedwell, whose subtle poster mutations seem to proudly carry the Maoist and Soviet Agitprop mantle. Art duo LOW PROFILE meanwhile describe themselves as being “drawn to tasks which are unfeasibly large, seemingly ridiculous and on the edges of sense and nonsense.”

But throughout there is an emphasis on challenging art. The snappily monikered Eva and Franco Mattes aka 0100101110101101.ORG boast online video performances that carry the proud accolade of being banned from YouTube.

For the duration of the show Project Space 11 is acting as a temporary campaign office and manufacturing base for “propaganda multiples that visitors can distribute as they see fit.”

The group promise work that refers to a broad range of pertinent issues. People of Plymouth, you have been warned.
