Narrator John Flitcroft (above) stars in Derek Nisbet's 20-minute story, which will be the subject of three performances at The Herbert's courtyard on Saturday January 27.
The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum in Coventry is appealing for members of the public to support a choral recitation in the museum’s courtyard to mark Holocaust Memorial Day on Saturday January 27 2009.
One Voice unites male, female and children’s choirs and narrator John Flitcroft in Derek Nisbet’s 20-minute piece following a trip the composer made to Auschwitz.
“We were struck by the lives of families that were being lived up to the moment when they were split up and taken away,” says Nisbet, whose story recounts a man’s attempts to pack his life into a tiny suitcase as the ominous sound of smashing glass echoes in his ears.
“The use of music helps to express things that are difficult to express, and we hope it will be a way of giving room for those watching to remember and reflect on those who lost their lives in this terrible period in history.”
“The choral piece will echo around the new covered courtyard as part of Coventry’s programme of activities on Holocaust Memorial Day and it would be great if as many people as possible could come along to watch,” said the museum’s Jamie Perry.
“Everyone connected with this new piece has worked extremely hard. As well as reminding everyone of the sense of loss of those who died in the Holocaust, it will also celebrate their lives.”
Performances start at 11am, 1pm & 3pm. Admission is free.
