Treading through a trendy showcase of more than 650 trainers in Hoxton, a fashionable line-up of stars, ranging from Ian Brown and Bobby Gillespie to Maverick Sabre and DMC, have rifled through Adidas's stripey history at a London exhibition opening.

Limited editions and previously unseen footwear teem through the eight-day show, Adidas Spezial, at the Hoxton Gallery. Brown and DMC have signed their old shoes, as have Lily Allen, Eminem, Public Enemy, Noel Gallagher and numerous other idols who idolise the brand.

“Adidas and I go back as far as I can remember,” said Chris Lowe, of the Pet Shop Boys.

“Watching [Ilie] Nastase at Wimbledon in the three stripes was always a highlight of the summer, and all those classic football and Olympic kits of the seventies defined an era.

“I’ve had so many Adidas trainers over the years it’s impossible to choose a favourite pair, though I do remember being overjoyed to get hold of a pair of the Bathing Ape limited edition Super Skates.

“At the moment I’m wearing to destruction a pair of Y-3s.

“Travelling around the world I always pop into the shop to see what special stuff they’ve got. Tokyo is particularly good.”

Mani, the bassist for The Stone Roses, said Adidas had been “something special – like you’re a follower of some sort of exclusive religion” during his upbringing in Manchester.

The show was initially drawn from the shoes of Gary Aspden, a passionate collector who dreamed up the display before becoming a consultant for the company.

  • Adidas Spezial runs until July 27 2013.
