Embellished: the Art of Fabulous Fabrics, Harris Museum and Art Gallery, Preston, November 14 2009 - November 2010
The Harris Museum and Art Gallery in Preston will be showcasing highlights from its fabulous collection of textiles in their latest exhibition.
Some of the finest examples of embroidery, printing and weaving will be used to explore how the clothes we wear turn us into walking works of art.
"This is a unique opportunity to see at first hand some of the most prized textiles from the Harris collection – a real treat for textile enthusiasts everywhere," said Mary Schoeser, textile advisor to English Heritage and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
"This stunning array of fabrics is guaranteed to delight and inspire visitors of all ages. I'm really looking forward to delivering my lecture at the Harris. It's a place which holds very special memories for me as it is actually one of the first museums I visited as a child."
Highlights of the exhibition include an 18th century gown in Spitalfields silk, believed to have been designed by the famous eighteenth century textile designer Anna Maria Garthwaite and a wall hanging from the 1890s designed by the artist Walter Crane and printed by the silk dyer and printer Thomas Wardle.
