Northampton Museums and Art Gallery

From Queen Victoria's wedding slippers to boots made for an elephant, the boot and shoe collections on this website offers some fabulous images for you to view. In addition to a detailed illustrated history of shoe fashion and highlights of the collection, the site offers glimpses of other cultures and ages through their shoes (men's cowboy boots, Indian toe peg sandals, miniature shoes for Chinese women with bound feet) and a series of interesting shoe facts in answer to frequently asked questions (what is the oldest pair of shoes?, why are shoes found under the floorboards of old houses?).The Shoe of the Month section will be particularly interesting to repeat visitors. June's exhibit is a decorated sole made by the 'pin work' technique. The site encompasses all of Northampton Museums and Art Gallery service, including Abington Museum, the art collections, social history, archaeology, natural science, leathercraft and militaria. You can also find out about upcoming exhibitions and events and how to get there!
