Exhibition: Starstruck, Ulster Museum, Belfast, until September 25 2011 It’s not just the stars who make the movie. Costume design is integral to the aesthetics of a film, and now some of their most dazzling examples, worn by the likes of Elizabeth Taylor, Helen Mirren, Daniel Craig, Natalie Portman, Keira Knightley and Tom Cruise, wiill go on show as part of this exhibition at the Ulster Museum.
Featuring 50 of the world’s most filmed and photographed costumes worn on television and the big screen, visitors will have the chance to see outfits worn by Madonna in Evita, Sienna Miller and Heath Ledger in Casanova, Renée Zellwegger in Miss Potter and Kate Winslet in Finding Neverland.
“Costume plays a critical role in the success of any period drama or film,” observes Kim Mawhinney, the Head of Art for National Museums Northern Ireland. Kim explains that the star quality of the items “cannot be underestimated”.
“It helps engage the audience, introduce the characters and their lives.”
Highlights include clothing from BAFTA and Oscar award-winning films and television dramas such as The King’s Speech, Downton Abbey, Shakespeare in Love, The Duchess and Dangerous Liaisons.
Designs donned by Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth, Liz Hurley in Christabel, Drew Barrymore in Ever After: A Cinderella Story, Daniel Craig in Defiance and Kate Beckinsale in The Golden Bowl are also on display.
