"Superstar weaver" Ptolemy Mann's Architecture of Cloth, Colour and Space

Exhibition Preview: The Architecture of Cloth, Colour and Space, Harley Gallery, Worksop, until October 18 2012

There are few textile artists as widely commissioned as Ptolemy Mann, a “superstar weaver” who works with dyed fibres on an upright loom and has made pieces for banks, cruise ships, universities and, near this show, the Kings Mill Hospital in Mansfield.

The latter have made good use of the artist’s understanding of the “emotional effects” of colour to create spaces with distinct soothing qualities.

Vivid textiles, wall art, carpets and prints abound from a conceptualist adroit at collaborating with everyone from ceramicists and hat makers to fashion designers.

“Colour is a deeply emotive subject,” she emphasises. “For most of us it is also highly personal.

“We each have a unique response to colour that we develop individually through experience and association.”
