The Quilt Museum in York has achieved Museums Libraries and Archives Council accreditation just over a year after it opened.

Staff have worked tirelessly to ensure that their Museum met the standards set by the MLA and are delighted that all of their hard work has paid off.

The Quilt Museum is the only museum in the country dedicated to the craft and holds a unique collection dating back to the 1700s.

“This is a great achievement for the Museum so soon after opening and demonstrates our commitment to our quilt collections and visitor experience,” said Fiona Diaper, Museum Director

“We have had a complete change of staff since we moved from Halifax and have more or less started from scratch so this is a great achievement for all of the staff and the 60 volunteers who without the museum would not be able to run.

“Access to the collections has really improved 100 per cent since we moved to York – we are open 5 days a week and thanks to a heritage lottery grant we have an education officer and a volunteer coordinator.”

The Museum holds around 700 quilts in its collection and displays around 70 at one time.

“Although we are up against some long established museums in York we are offering something that is completely different to the competition,” Fiona added.

“We are a specialist museum and still trying to build up our audiences but the reaction we have had so far has been really positive - the half term workshops for kids are already fully booked, which is fantastic.

“The Museum is here to encourage people to take and interest in textiles and perhaps take it up to keep this skill alive.”

Andrew Motion, Chair of MLA, added: “Being awarded Accreditation is an impressive achievement. It recognises the high standard and service that the Quilt Museum provides and acknowledges the hard work of the staff.”

The Museum is open Tuesday – Saturday, 10.00am-4.00pm. The Museum closes during exhibition changeovers, so it is wise to check the website www.quiltmuseum.org.uk or phone 01904 613 242 to check opening times. Admission charge applies.
