The Brighton Craft Fair, MADE 08, opened on November 28 2008 at Brighton’s Corn Exchange.
Clare Gogerty, editor of COAST magazine, announced the joint winners of the £1000 Brighton & Hove Collects Award which will see Nick Barberton’s carved wooden vessels and Ark Glass’s blown glass garden sculptures added to the Brighton & Hove Museums’ craft collection.
Rachel Andrew from Ark Glass explained how she developed her glass bird baths: “When our spiral display at Hampton Court flooded in the rain, it became a water feature, gushing around. It takes a bird about three weeks – they circle around – before they use the feeders.”

Among the embroiderers, fibre artists and clothes designers on display at the weekend–long fair, which runs until Sunday November 21, is the relaunched 1970s brand Clothkits, who have a stall of retro-themed sew-your-own clothing designs.
Recycling is popular, and Laura Marsden’s delicate “Eternal Lace” wall pieces made from waste plastic bags, and Joanne Tinker’s tiny goblets made from foil sweet wrappers are particularly striking.
Jed Green’s jewellery uses innovative silver and glass sculptural forms with exotic painted effects inside. Helen Noakes creates humorous pendants of swimmers set in resin with the caption “Come on in, the water’s lovely”, and Scottish designer Islay Spalding shows quirky rings and bracelets combining silver and coloured resin.
