Exhibition: Transvangarde, October Gallery, London, until January 30 2010

October Gallery is continuing to promote transcultural and avant-garde artwork with Transvangarde, an exhibition featuring a major new metal sculpture, international contributions and works by cult author and poet William S Burroughs.

The centrepiece of the show is the sculpture, In The World But Don't Know the World? by El Anatsui, which has arrived at the gallery straight from its premier at the third Moscow Biennale.

Consisting of a series of freeflowing, interchangeable units, the sculpture is meant as a metaphor of the mind's creation of meaning, and its title refers to the new developments to which humanity strives to progress. It will be the first time the work has been shown in the UK.

El Anatsui has created a number of sculptures over his career and has drawn attention worldwide for creating metal sculptures made of tens of thousands of liquor bottle-tops.

Transvangarde draws on artists from all over the world, from Africa to North America, Japan and China. The exhibition also showcases pieces by Chinese photographer Huang Xu, African calligraphist Rachid Koraichi and paintings by the American Aubrey Williams.
