The team who set loose a 42-tonne spider on the streets of Liverpool last year are due to leave a lasting impression on Durham during November 2009.

Producers Artichoke have put together a spectacular package of luminous art for the city, which holds its second festival of light this year.

2009’s event will be called Lumiere and is set to transform historic landmarks, such as Durham Cathedral, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Techno-arts collective United Visual Artists have planned an installation for the nave, while projection artist Ross Ashton takes on the building exterior.

Other planned sites for the festival include the city’s riverbed, which lighting studio Creatmosphere are set to fill with shining pebbles.

International artists Ron Haselden, Simon Corder and Daan Roosegaarde are also in the line up, with visitors being told to expect the unexpected.

“The element of surprise and delight is key to what we do,” said Artichoke Co-Director Helen Marriage. “All our work is about giving the public unforgettable, magical experiences that make them look at their surroundings in a different way.”

Durham is bidding to become the first ever UK Capital of Culture in 2013 and seems determined to get glowing reviews. In 2007 it dazzled crowds of 30,000 with a smaller scale event, Enlightenment: Durham International Light Festival.

Lumiere takes place November 12-15 in Durham. Visit www.artichoke.org.uk for more information or visit www.durhamcityofculture.co.uk to find out more about the City of Culture bid.
