A dramatic rooftop gallery showcasing collections of glass, jewellery and a world-class Belleek collection will feature as part of the first major refurbishment of Ulster museum in 35 years. The museum - one of Belfast’s most popular visitor attractions - is due to re-open in summer 2009.
Over £15 million is now in place in support of the project, which is supported by the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL), the Heritage Lottery Fund and a range of other funders.
Other redevelopments will include overhead walkways, a revamped Hall of Wonders, a new restaurant and extensive remodelling of the museum’s landscape in Belfast’s botanical gardens.

In an announcement last week, Tim Cooke, Chief Executive of National Museums Northern Ireland said: “The project is on schedule and within budget. We continue to work hard on raising funds in a challenging climate and if more money comes in the next couple of months we will continue to expand the project to make sure we make the most of this opportunity.”
A spokesperson for DCAL said: “It is hoped that the redevelopment of this iconic building will act as a beacon for the renaissance of Northern Ireland.”
An extensive outreach programme, taking exhibitions and collections to schools, libraries, science centres and local museums throughout Northern Ireland, is taking place during the museum's closure.
