Eight finalists have been selected to go through to the last stage of judging in the Jerwood Moving Image Awards 2008.
It’s the inaugural year for the prize, and the range of entries demonstrates just how vibrant this area of artistic practice is.
“The eight finalists have done outstandingly well to get this far,” said Wayne McGregor, Chair of the judging panel. “Taken as a whole, they offer us a staggering array of narratives, styles, techniques, tones and textures, which says so much about the potential and power of the medium."
“Some incredibly distinctive voices have been uncovered by the Jerwood Moving Image Awards, and these eight in particular look set to define the terms of practice in digital moving image for years to come.”
Among the finalists are a hypnotic portrait of a deserted caravan park, a song painted with light and a witty examination of procrastination – all being exhibited now in the Jerwood Space, London. The digital works are also available to download from www.jerwoodmovingimage.org.
Other works include a poetic meditation of the death of a man (The Final Act of Geng Yaoting), and a subversive study of popular culture in a postcolonial world (The White and Black Minstrel Show).
The finalists are:
• The White and Black Minstrel Show – David Blandy
• Evensong – Sophie Clements
• The Final Act of Geng Yaoting – Richard Forbes-Hamilton
• My Life at 40 – Laurie Hill
• Procrastination – Johnny Kelly
• Sea Change – Rosie Pedlow & Joe King
• Jump – Norman Wilcox Giessen
• And when the Light fades I shall never forget – George Wu & Bonnie Carr
All of the original 30 shortlisted works, selected from over 350 submissions, remain available to view on the Jerwood Moving Image Awards website. The three winners, each receiving £10,000 will be announced on March 4 2008.
