Seizing on our appetite for art and fine dining, the Art Fund's baking campaign sees the Great British Bake Off meet Matisse
Frances Quinn, the Designer Baker who has become arguably the country’s most in-demand culinary craftswoman after winning last year’s Great British Bake Off, has made a homage in fromage to Henri Matisse’s Blue Nude (I) as part of a well-received campaign to support museums and galleries across the country.

Based on the artist’s exquisite 1952 piece, which is currently starring in Tate’s major new exhibition of his works, the cheesecake is a centrepiece in the Art Fund’s Edible Masterpieces, which aimed to entice art and museum-loving kitchen hands to indulge in cooking challenges on Friday (May 9 2014).
“I know that Frances’ work will be an inspiration to all,” suggested Stephen Deuchar, the director of the Fund, who said that nearly 1,000 supporters had signed up since the campaign launched in February.
“We're really encouraged by the wave of enthusiasm for Edible Masterpieces.
“The idea of baking to help museums and galleries seems to have truly captured the public imagination.”
Recipe ideas on the accompanying website include a silvery Damien Hirst skull filled with buttercream, a Van Gogh Ploughman's with peppercorns for eyes, a gingerbread woman based on Sarah Lucas’s Self-portrait with Eggs and battenbergs, cakes and shortbread inspired by Mondrian, Pollock and Wedgwood.
Entrants can make donations and order fundraising packs for their own events. Bakers at The Craft Studio and Glassworks in Newland competed for a glass-fusing workshop over the weekend, while Firstsite, in Colchester, offered biscuits and cakes based on the gallery’s collection and architecture during the weekend.
The Stanley and Audrey Burton Gallery in Leeds will also be offering jigsaw puzzle pieces of cake to decorate for a work of art which will be placed within the gallery.
