What do teenagers want to see in galleries and museums? Bolder labelling, careful use of radiators and revolving displays are among the answers, according to a new, youngster-driven investigation from campaign group Kids in Museums.
Part of the Changing Cultures initiative, run by the Welsh Government in a £13,000 drive to let young people fashion change in museums in Wales, a survey of adolescents informs the film, Our Take, which was created by teenagers at Newport Museum and Art Gallery and Wrexham County Borough Museum and Archives.
Full of the optimism of youth, it proposes a number of straightforward, affordable ways in which venues can create lifelong culture fans.
John Griffiths, the Minister for Culture and Sport, said it was “refreshing” to see teenagers deciding how museums could become “more relevant and interesting” for their age group.
The film has been distributed free to all museums taking part in the Museum Accreditation Scheme in Wales. It is available online and as a DVD in Welsh and English. Follow @OurTakeFilm on Twitter for more.
The campaign has also announced the 20 museums in the running for this year’s Family Friendly Museum Award, the prestigious annual competition rewarding venues who best accommodate the varying needs of family visitors.
Inspired by the words of one young guest at Bristol’s nominee, Mshed – “it’s interesting because it has older things than my nan” – the list is typically diverse, with fossil vaults, a Victorian sweet shop and tanks of frogs all featuring.
“There are touch screen games and lots of bags around the museum,” wrote one 11-year-old at Preston's Harris Museum and Art Gallery, encapsulating the ethos of friendliness and accessibility.
“You can get your hands on absolutely loads of things.”
