Exhibition Preview: From Death to Death and Other Small Tales – Masterpieces from the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and the D Daskalopoulos Collection, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, December 15 2012 – September 8 2013

From the morbid visions of Otto Dix to the foreboding creations of Louise Bourgeois, a meeting of the Scottish National Gallery’s holdings and key works from the Daskalopoulos collection – a wealth of post-war and contemporary ingenuity established in 1994 – should make for a gripping, if occasionally discomforting, new exhibition.

Curated by Keith Hartley, of the gallery, the display consists of more than 120 works studying the body as a vessel for existential, social and ideological struggle.

Hartley has taken the approach of ordering exhibits into pairs of groups, teasing out common themes and differences, or placing contemporary expressionism, say, within rooms full of figurative paintings – Rachel Whiteread and Bruce Nauman are among the artists whose works will face each other.

“The opportunity to showcase the national collection alongside this world-class collection is a major coup,” suggests Dr Simon Groom, the gallery’s Director.

“It allows us to show the very best of international contemporary art to the Scottish public whilst continuing our innovative use of the collection.

“The show will be daring, surprising and of international significance.”

  • Open 10am-5pm (7pm Thursday, closed December 25 and 26, 12pm-5pm January 1). Admission free. Follow the gallery on Twitter @NatGalleriesSco.
