Rapid social change in China is a topic close to home among the multitude of Chinese artists enjoying debut solo shows in London this year, but few are likely to represent it as kaleidoscopically as Ye Hongxing.
Chosen as one of the country’s top 20 rising artists by the director of Art Cologne and the curator of the Asian Art Museum in California, Beijing-based Hongxing’s fantastical works could scarcely be summarised with the word colourful.
They use decorative and mosaic elements to create collages of hybrid realities festooned with ancient spiritual symbols, sacred ideology, fictional landscapes and modern machinery, gathered under the title of HG Wells’ novel of more than a century ago.
Traditions and values, the artist suggests, remain part of the sometimes chaotic, somewhat fragmented modern China.
