Playworld

  • 25 July — 21 September 2014 *on now

Playworld
25 July–21 September 2014
NN, Number Nine Guildhall Road, Northampton, NN1 1DP
Opening night, 25 July 2014, 6pm

Playworld is a group exhibition featuring artists working with roller derby, football, other sports, games and their subcultures. Sports and pursuits have rules that govern them, becoming their own microcosms, but the cultures spawned by them bleed out into the rest of reality.

Roller derby encourages empowering alter egos through skate names and personas. The real world is left outside; all that matters is what happens on the track. Ellie Harrison (aka Ch£apSkate), an artist and skater with Glasgow Roller Derby, established the National Museum of Roller Derby (NMRD) during her residency at Glasgow Women's Library in 2012. The two Northamptonshire roller derby leagues, the Shoetown Slayers and Vendetta Vixens, have helped select the exhibits from the NMRD as well as contributing their own items. Many of the exhibits illustrate the grass roots and creative nature of the sport and the impact it has had on the lives of the skaters.

Jamie Shovlin’s new body of work follows the Leicestershire Under 16s football team, the Anstey Swifts. NN will be screening Shovlin’s first film about the Midlands team from this, his new series. Phillip Marsden, meanwhile, turns computer games from his youth into the subject matter for tattoo art. Based in Sydney, Australia, Zelda, Streetfighter and Super Mario all feature in his ink drawings on paper stained with Yorkshire Tea.

Role Playing Games are being created during this exhibition by SeeNN, NN’s Youth Arts Collective, in which players adhere to their internal logic. Entire worlds with complex infrastructure and altered metaphysics exist through shared consent and these ideas will be toyed with by SeeNN during the show.

Opening night: Friday 25 July 2014, 6pm–8pm. All welcome.

The Garden of Delights, engraved drawings on granite, installation view.

Mladen Miljanović: The Garden of Delights

  • 4 October — 7 December 2014

Mladen Miljanović
The Garden of Delights
4 October—7 December 2014
NN, Number Nine Guildhall Road, Northampton NN1 1DP

NN is delighted to present the first solo exhibition in the UK by Mladen Miljanović. The exhibition brings together a number of his recent artworks including the eponymous Garden of Delights. This central piece contains more than one hundred tombstone motifs found and collected in the Central Balkans and engraved onto a triptych of granite slabs mounted on a metal frame. Before enrolling at the Academy of Arts in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Miljanović worked engraving tombstones. These motifs were chosen as illustrations of their indulgences and because they wish to see them immortalised by means of the realistic, a practice that became popular during the rise of kitsch and turbo-folk culture in the 1980—1990s. Referencing Hieronymus Bosch's Renaissance painting The Garden of Earthly Delights, the form of the image of a personal indulgence becomes an expression of the collective absurd and discord. For Miljanović the graveyard is an area storing an encyclopaedia of images of individual lives joined to form a garden of a collective eternity.

This project is part of NN's Northampton Multiverse series of exhibitions exploring different artist's worlds. A series of events will accompany this exhibition. For further information about the project and NN visit: www.nncontemporaryart.org
