Pip & Pop

  • 14 February — 27 April 2014 *on now

Pip & Pop
14 February–27 April 2014
NN, Number Nine Guildhall Rd, Northampton, NN1 1DP
Launch night: 13 February 2014, 6pm.

NN is delighted to launch the Northampton Multiverse season with a large-scale, site-specific new work by Pip & Pop. Pip & Pop is also known as the Australian artist Tanya Schultz. Her practice ranges from installation and painting to wall-work and sculpture. She works using fine sand, sugar, origami, plastic figures, glitter, lights and found objects to create intricate, gloriously technicolored worlds.

Margaret Cavendish’s 1666 forerunner of science fiction The Blazing World forms the starting point for Tanya’s research. Cavendish imagines an alternate world and utopia that the Northampton-based graphic novelist Alan Moore referenced as a setting for part of his graphic novel series The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Both of these works inform Pip & Pop’s immersive installation at NN that also draws from Aboriginal sand painting and pan-Asia manga. This new world from beyond the other side of the planet is also a playful critique of mass-consumption.

A range of events will accompany the exhibition including Film Night’s, Crit Group for artists, Show & Tell, Write Club, creative workshops for families and more.

Even a Stopped Clock, 2012. Aaron Head

Jonbar Archaeology

  • 23 May — 6 July 2014

Jonbar Archaeology
23 May–6 July 2014
NN, Number Nine Guildhall Road, Northampton, NN1 1DP

Jo Blake Cave, Daniel Bye, Aaron Head, Ben Moor, Jantine Wijnja, Ryan van Winkle, Simon Woolham and more.

Jonbar points are a science fiction term pinpointing the moment where histories diverge. With one foot in reality and one in the imagination, the town architecture is excavated for spoken word, text, sculpture, photography, poetry and performance influenced by Rudyard Kipling and Alan Moore.

The artist takes on the guise of archaeologist, uncovering hidden 'histories' for the duration of the exhibition. Starting with a map of Northampton, week by week, the artists and writers will contribute to the map with their findings.

Events accompanying the project include regular events such as the Crit Group, Show & Tell and creative workshops for families, as well as pop-up events by the artists and writers as they dig through Northampton. NN will explore further the idea of Jonbar points in popular culture with a panel discussion presented by Pornokitsch.

Opening night, 22 May 2014, 6pm–8pm. All welcome.

Continuing NN’s exploration of parallel worlds they turn to Eurovision, with its own definitions of Europe and where power ballads or turbo folk rule. Teaming up with the Errol Flynn Filmhouse (EFF), NN will present a celebration of artist music.

In line with Eurovision’s guidelines, curators, artists and institutions across the European Broadcasting Area are invited to nominate an artist from their country working with music video. The nominated artist music videos will be screened at NN during normal gallery opening hours in the lead-up to the Eurovision Song Contest final broadcast at the EFF.

Live streaming of the Eurovision Finale will be at EFF on Saturday 10 May from 8pm, followed by an after party hosted at NN’s new Courtyard from 11pm until late.
