Art Laboratory, Flávia Müller Medeiros and Kristina Norman.
NN, Number Nine Guildhall Road, Northampton, NN1 1DP
A group show featuring Art Laboratory, Flávia Müller Medeiros and Kristina Norman. The works aim to consider, celebrate, challenge and protest political contexts in Armenia, Belarus and Estonia.
Art Laboratory is a cross-generational artist group based in Yerevan, Armenia. In their country exhibitions can be shut down if deemed too radical by the government. In reaction to this oppression the artists take the work into the streets with graffiti work, performance and action all with the aim to educate and stimulate questioning from the public about the status quo.
Flávia Müller Medeiros photographed 400 Belarusian students and staff who have all left their home country to pursue their studies at European Humanities University. The government closed the University when it was in Minsk, but the EU rehoused it at the edge of the country in the then newly European Union neighbour, Lithuania.
The portrait of the university body is a defiant celebration.
Kristina Norman from Estonia works with film. Showing at NN are works that use documentary to link history and social phenomena of the present. The Finnish Civil war is underrepresented in Norman’s eyes when compared to the Swedish and Russian rules. Her film 0.8 square metres focuses on a Finnish art gallery that was a prison during the war and features a public event and interviews lacing the past to the present.
Events accompanying the exhibition, including artist talks and a family workshop, can be found at www.nncontemporaryart.org/whats-on/
