This earthly paradise offers a riot of colour in spring, an oasis of tranquility in summer followed by a splendid show as the leaves change in the autumn. Discover Exbury’s hidden beauty and escape the cares of the world as you explore a myriad of pathways. Let the train take the strain on a 20 minute journey or ride a chauffeur driven buggy to tour the Gardens.
The Gardens open on Saturday 09 March 2013 open daily from 10am - 5pm last admission (or dusk if earlier) until Sun 3 November 2013.

The Steam Railway runs every day the Gardens are open, with trains departing Exbury Central Station throughout the day. Exbury Gardens were awarded "Best Garden Winner" in the Hudson's Heritage Awards of 2011 and Gardeners World voted Exbury as one of the top places in the country to see Camellias. Four Seasons Artists Exhibition, Five Arrows Gallery at Exbury Gardens & Steam Railway
Distinguished artists concerned with all aspects of the natural world are mounting a major show at Exbury Gardens during early spring.
The Four Seasons Art group, headed by painter and writer Marianna Kneller, Fellow of the Society of Botanical Artists, will show paintings, sculpture, drawings, prints and etchings in Exbury’s Five Arrows Gallery for eight weeks from early April.
Marianna, resident artist at Exbury Gardens from 1980-2004 and a founder member of the Society of Botanical Artists (SBA), is known for her unparalleled studies of the Rothschild Collection of Rhododendrons and is the author of a superbly illustrated book on rhododendrons, published by David and Charles in 1995. The RHS have awarded her the complete range of Grenfell Medals for Botanic Art, the Linley Medal and a prestigious Gold Medal for her rhododendron species leaf studies.
“Many of the artists who have exhibited at Exbury in the past are coming together with some new talent under the ‘Four Seasons’ mantle and I’m delighted to say we have a show that is exciting and wide-ranging,” she said. “There is traditional and contemporary work and a great range of medium and styles”.
Please click Four Seasons Artists to view the biography and contact information for the artists attending the 2013 exhibition.
If you are visiting the Gardens primarily to visit the Exhibition, please check with the Exbury reception before you depart on 023 8089 1203. The Exhibition may occasionally be closed due to the staging of private functions, though we endeavour to show these dates on the website). The exhibition is scheduled to be closed on the following dates in 2013: Mon 1 May . We apologise for any inconvenience this causes visitors.

The Glory of the Garden Focal Event at Exbury Gardens & Steam Railway
Exbury Gardens are world-famous for the Rothschild Collection of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, rare trees and plants. The early spring Rock Garden and Heather Garden, daffodils, camellias, magnolias and primroses give way to bluebells, rhododendrons and azaleas, with colour and birdsong at every turn. The spectacle of the Azalea Bowl in May is not to be missed. 20 miles of technicolour pathways lead to an average visit time in April and May of over 5 hours, although visitors can let "the train take the strain" on a 20 min journey into the north-east corner of the Gardens, or take a chauffeur driven buggy tour to the best of the colour.

Nerine Exhibition, Five Arrows Gallery at Exbury Gardens & Steam Railway
See Exbury’s fantastic collection of Nerine sarniensis in the Five Arrows Gallery, specially prepared to highlight the extraordinary beauty of these hybrids as they scintillate under direct light.
Lionel de Rothschild first developed and hybridised these tender greenhouse-loving Nerines at Exbury in the 1920s and 1930s, coming up with many classic blooms. The collection was dispersed in 1974 when the best bulbs were acquired by enthusiast and plantsman extraordinaire, the late Sir Peter Smithers, one-time MP for Winchester and Secretary-General of the EU in Strasbourg, holder of 8 RHS Gold Medals for plant photography and the Veitch Gold Memorial Medal for contributions to horticulture.
Sir Peter selected only the best and most beautiful diamond lilies for his breeding programme, holding annual ‘beauty competitions’ on the balcony of his house, Vico Morcote, overlooking Lake Lugano in Switzerland.
In 1995, the vastly improved collection came back home to Exbury, where Nicholas de Rothschild, Lionel’s grandson, took up the challenge of developing the strain, until a glasshouse at Exbury was filled with new hybrids that he has produced.
Nicholas, president of the Nerine Society, and an expert on nerines in his own right, has taken up the mantle of developing these sparkling, beautifully coloured plants with enthusiasm.
Originally found on Table Mountain overlooking Cape Town in South Africa, the diamond lilies flower in a spectrum of colours from their original oranges, scarlet and white through new purples, pinks, mauves, reds, scarlets, copper and bronzes which scintillate in the light with gold or silver crystalline flecks that make their petals sparkle.
Nicholas has produced more than 100 new hybrids and collectors and visitors to Exbury may buy nerines that have never been seen before. Nerines will be for sale at the exhibition. To view the dedicated nerine website, visit: http://www.nerines.com/
Gardening guru Alan Titchmarsh visited the Nerine Exhibition in October 2009 and recorded in his Saturday Express Magazine column: "After 40-odd years of gardening, I like to think that I've seen some remarkable spectacles, but I can honestly say that few of them rank with the sight of a vast greenhouse full of flowering Guernsey lilies at Exbury last autumn. There, Nick de Rothschild presides over thousands of potted bulbs whose glistening flowers of white, pale pink, lilac, purple, orange and scarlet entrance all who see them. If you want gosh-factor in your autumn greenhouse, Guernsey lilies have it in shiny spades."
