The Gardens are a spectacular 200 acre (100 hectare) site, world-famous for the Rothschild Collection of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and rare trees and shrubs. This earthly paradise offers a riot of colour in spring, an oasis of tranquility in summer followed by a splendid show as the leaves change in the autumn. Discover Exbury’s hidden beauty and escape the cares of the world as you explore a myriad of pathways. Let the train take the strain on a 20 minute journey or ride a chauffeur driven buggy to tour the Gardens.

The Gardens open on Saturday 14th March 2015 open daily from 10am - 5pm last admission (or dusk if earlier) until Sun 8 November 2015.
Mr Eddy’s Tearooms, Art Gallery, Gift Shop and Plant Sales share the same visiting hours as the Gardens
The Steam Railway runs every day the Gardens are open, with trains departing Exbury Central Station throughout the day. (See website for timetable) Exbury Gardens were awarded "Best Garden Winner" in the Hudson's Heritage Awards of 2011 and Gardeners World voted Exbury as one of the top places in the country to see Camellias being awarded "Camellia Garden of Excellence" 2014. The original Camellia Walk skirts the south-east edge of Home Wood. The New Camellia Walk, planted out with many American and New Zealand hybrids and magnolias, provides an interesting contrast in styles.

Lachenalia Exhibition at Exbury Gardens & Steam Railway

  • 14 March — 6 April 2015 *on now

Exbury has a fine Lachenalia collection, which grows alongside the famous collection of Nerine sarniensis, traditionally displayed during October. In 2015 the collection will be on show in the Gardens Five Arrows Gallery until Monday 6th April, alongside a wider collection of South African bulbs. Don't miss this spectacle which draws together a collection not seen anywhere previously in the world!
Lachenalias (also known as the Cape Cowslip or the Leopard Lily) are a family of about 120 species, belonging to the greater Hyacinthaceae family. They are winter flowering bulbs, which originate from the winter rainfall region of southern Africa, being dormant in summer, and growing and flowering in winter.
At Exbury the first lachenalias will begin to flower in autumn with the last ones flowering in early spring. However, the bulk of the lachenalias will flower from February to April.
Our fine collection also contains many of the lachenalia variations, extending to over 120 different species or variations.
These cool greenhouse plants grow in a good range of colours, including the golden yellow Aloides, through to magenta, coral-red, yellow, purple and green colours. Many lachenalias have spotted leaves, whilst some have pustules like drops of water.
For more information on lachenalias, visit the website: http://www.exbury.co.uk/website/lachenalia.aspx
