When the tide is out, the Thames is the longest open – air archaeological site in London, and much of the foreshore is freely accessible to the public. The Thames Discovery Programme is a community archaeology project designed to monitor the exposed archaeological sites of the inter-tidal area of the Thames with volunteer support. These archaeological sites are often unrecognised and unprotected, and are vulnerable to the twice – daily scouring of the tidal river.
