The Shed is a brand new architecture centre for South Yorkshire. We will be working with communities across the region, and with schools and young people in particular, supporting them to become more confident in helping to shape, maintain and make buildings and places more beautiful and sustainable.
Our particular area of expertise is in creative engagement and design enabling for both local communities and professionals involved in the built environment. We strongly advocate the creation of opportunities for the involvement of local people in the design and planning processes at all stages and with an equal voice. We do this by helping to create a unique and genuine dialogue between local communities and the decision makers.
In schools, we offer unique and innovative learning opportunities through bringing experts into schools and taking pupils out to visit and learn more about the architecture, highways, streetscapes and landscapes around them. We use a creative, innovative and cross-curricular approach to environmental design to facilitate the teaching of a wide range of subjects from Mathematics to Art and Citizenship.
We believe that good design is by definition an inclusive process. The more involved local people become in the design process, the better those places become because they work for and with the people who use them. This includes respecting and looking after our built heritage as well as encouraging new designs and ideas.
