Raphael Samuel (1934-1996) was one of Britain’s foremost historians. Creator of the Ruskin-based History Workshop movement, and founding editor of History Workshop Journal, Raphael was a lifelong socialist for whom history and politics were inextricably entwined.

In the final year of his life, Raphael established a Centre for East London History at the University of East London. The Raphael Samuel History Centre is the successor to this initiative, and is dedicated to promoting historical enquiry in the spirit of Raphael, that is with openness, imagination, and creative rigour.

The mission of the RSHC is to promote research in four areas: London history, especially the history of east London and the Thames Gateway region; comparative metropolitan histories; memory studies; and psychoanalytic approaches to history. We aim to create public forums for historical discussion and debate, and are committed to taking history into the wider community through educational and outreach initiatives.
