The Theatre Royal is the last working Regency playhouse in Britain. Owned by Greene King brewery, it has been in the care of the National Trust since 1975 and is run by an independent theatre company.
Our extensive programme of performances and outreach activities aspires to turn your visit into a unique and unforgettable event: watch an 18th century production, attend a lecture, a family heritage weekend, or join us on a guided tour to discover the fascinating history of this remarkable building and Georgian drama.
Now that the theatre is fully restored to its original 1819 glory, our Heritage programme will offer our visitors a unique theatrical and heritage experience. Under the banner of our Restoring the Repertoire series, we're going to be rediscovering much of the undeservedly forgotten theatrical repertoire of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
You can take a guided tour of the Theatre or take a more leisurely look during one of our regular Open Doors sessions. We plan to establish a programme of lectures and workshops, as well as a comprehensive library archive.
