Siobhan Davies Dance is one of the country’s most outstanding and innovative dance companies and choreographer Siobhan Davies advocates for the wider recognition of dance as a significant and extraordinary art form. The Company’s RIBA award-winning building, Siobhan Davies Studios in Southwark, South London, provides a local, national and international resource for learning about movement and dance, and a meeting ground to discuss new ideas. 26 April – 2 June 2013

Opening and Live Performance Event
26 April, 7-9pm

For the opening of his new exhibition, Moving Images, at Siobhan Davies Studios, visual artist Phil Coy will animate the building in a new way. Working with sound and movement, Coy will present two new live performances, which will be recorded and remain like residues for the duration of the exhibition, which runs until 2 June.

Material Choir reflects Coy’s continued interest in architecture and the nature of utilitarian language. Sung by Choir East, the performance moves through the building, its rhythm shaped by the speed and position of the singers, as well as the repetition and deviation of the materials through which they pass. In Moving Images, individual dancers are required not to dance but instead to maintain a pose whilst holding scaled photographs of architectural details taken from their position. Coy recognises that non-movement is an important aspect of any choreography and is interested in the tension that is implied in its physical impossibility for any living person.

Join us for a unique occasion, the only time during the exhibition when these works will be shown in their live versions. This event is part of South London Art Map’s (SLAM) Last Fridays.
