The Bank of England Museum tells the story of the Bank from its foundation in 1694 to its role in today's economy. Interactive programmes with graphics and video help explain its many and varied roles. Popular exhibits include a unique collection of banknotes and a genuine gold bar which may be handled.

The Museum offers presentations for groups of between 15 and 50 people. Cinema presentations can be adapted to suit the age, knowledge and ability of the group. They are free of charge but their popularity means they must be booked in advance (020 7601 5545).

Chicks' Great EGGscape

During the Easter break join the Bank of England Museum for the Chicks’ Great EGGscape, the perfect event to entertain the whole family.

Somewhere inside the Museum lies a golden egg. Join the hunt to see if you can find the hidden egg and chick’s by following the trail around the Museum. Children can then get creative and become their favourite Easter animal by decorating a mask or finger puppet of their choice. There’s a chocolate egg for every child.

Activity sheets are also available for children of all ages, with a small prize for all those who take part.

Museums at Night - Banknotes and Bullion

  • 19 May 2017 5:30-9pm

The Bank of England Museum will be open from 5.30pm - 9pm offering a rare opportunity to visit out of regular opening hours. There will be special talks taking place throughout the evening giving visitors a unique insight into some of the most intriguing and fascinating objects.

The Museum team will also be revealing some unseen objects from the Bank's collection which visitors can handle.

Banknote experts will be conducting short talks giving background information about our current notes. Visitors can also explore the Banknote Gallery, which presents the story of the banknote and how they have evolved over the years, from simple paper receipts into the most sophisticated note that the Bank has issued to date.

Admission and all activities are free, and there's no need to book.

A film presentation about money and prices for 8-14 year olds (Key Stages 2 and 3).
This sixty minutes presentation is cross-curricular and contains educational links to English, Maths, History and Citizenship/PSHE/PSE/PSD. The themes covered potentially link to the well-being aims of the Every Child Matters agenda.
Children will enjoy the upbeat style of the film and the humorous scenarios which explain the points in an accessible and entertaining way. Using sheets of new banknotes worth thousands of pounds, children will examine the security features and be encouraged to play an active part throughout the presentation.
