Stomping Stories - The Flower
Brigg lives in a small, grey room in a large, grey city. He finds a book full of pictures of bright, vibrant objects called flowers! But he cannot find any? Explore spring time Arnos Vale and discover the beautiful plants that make it such a special place, whilst finding out how Brigg brings flowers to his world. Then plant your sunflower to take home and grow. John Light’s enigmatic story is told with utter simplicity and His increasingly optimistic vision is hauntingly captured by Lisa Evans’s beautiful and whimsical illustrations.

What's Bugging You? Things That Live On Us.
Human beings haven’t been walking the Earth for very long compared to some of the other creatures that share this planet. Many of them have evolved to take advantage of the ecological niches that abide on or in the human body. Most are harmless and some are actually beneficial, but there are always a few which have to spoil it for the rest. It’s these few that this talk will concentrate on. See website for details of this series of talks. Book in person, on 0117 9719117 ext 214 or at http://www.arnosvale.org.uk/index.php/eventsandactivities/523-whats-bugging-you-things-that-live-on-us.

Your Arnos Vale - A People’s History of Arnos Vale Cemetery
Your Arnos Vale
“Your Arnos Vale – A people’s history of Arnos Vale Cemetery”
Arnos Vale Cemetery Trust has announced the launch of an oral history project, funded by the award of a grant of £35,100 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and match-funded by the Friends of Arnos Vale Cemetery.
About the Project
Your Arnos Vale – a people’s history of Arnos Vale Cemetery is a 12-month community oral history project to commemorate the twentieth century heritage of Arnos Vale through a gathering of people’s memories of the cemetery, spanning the past 25 years.
The project, supported by the Friends of Arnos Vale Cemetery, The Post newspaper, M Shed, the University of Bristol and University of the West of England, was launched at the Friends of Arnos Vale’s 25th Anniversary celebrations on 7th October 2012 and will run until September 2013.
What is happening
The project aims to collect 30 interviews from Friends and members of the public who were involved in the campaign to save Arnos Vale in the period 1987-2003. It will also capture memories associated with Arnos Vale over the years from a range of visitors and users.
Visitors are invited along to Four FREE public events at the cemetery in spring 2013:
Sunday 10th March 10:00am-4:00pm
Sunday 14th April 10:00am - 4:00pm
Sunday 12th May 10:00am - 4:00pm
Sunday 9th June 10:00am – 4:00pm
More details about the public events will follow in 2013.
The oral histories gathered in the project will be edited into sound clips for visitors to hear in audio posts across the cemetery, plus downloadable apps for android and iphone, online podcasts and an accompanying trail leaflet. The oral histories will also be added to the cemetery’s historic archive and the oral history collection at M Shed.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Tell us your story
We want to find out from you, in your words, why Arnos Vale means so much to you. This could be because of family – do you have a family grave here? Or a local connection – are you a neighbour? Perhaps you have fond memories of the cemetery as a childhood playground or it was the site of a pivotal life moment for you? Were you part of the campaign to save Arnos Vale? Did you sign the council petition? Were you part of the “Arnos Army” or member of the Friends? For any of these reasons and many others, we would love to hear from you.
Tell Us Your Story - please download and complete a form, collect a flyer from the East Lodge Reception or, alternatively, complete the on-line form on our website
For more information about the project, please email:

For impromptu taster tours between now and 2013 please enquire at the East Lodge reception on Saturdays about volunteer guide availability for the day. To arrange a bespoke group tour please look at our Private Tours page. Join our mailing list to be the first to hear about public tours and events at Arnos Vale in 2013.
A short taster tour taking in the main landmarks, monuments and people of Arnos Vale. This is an ideal introduction to the 45-acre site for first-time visitors, or as an overview of the site's history for regular visitors.
Please check with the East Lodge reception on the day to confirm that a tour is running. Then simply turn up, buy a ticket, and go!
Please wear sensible shoes and warm waterproof clothing to this event.
Arnos Vale Cemetery is not a fully accessible site. This tour route may include some steep slopes, steps and muddy paths. Find out more about visiting Arnos Vale safely.
The cost from March 2013 is £5 per head (no concessions) and there is no need to book! Tickets are sold from the East Lodge shop on the day.
You may want to check the tour is running before venturing out. See the list below of all dates. We do rely on Tour Guide availability and good weather also helps - due to unforeseen circumstances there may be occasions that we are unable to run a tour!
Please check below for dates that the Taster Tours are running or alternatively ring our Reception on 0117 9719117.

Getting there
Getting Here
Arnos Vale lies close to Bristol's city centre on the A4 Bath Road, at Brislington. Pedestrians have a choice of three entry points - from the Bath Road; from Cemetery Road (off the A37 Wells Road) or via Arnos Park. The nearest train station is Temple Meads, located just under a mile east of the site. Bus services 1, X39, 57, 178 and 349 stop outside the Bath Road gates. There is parking for bicycles at the back of the Visitor Reception (East Lodge). Parking on site is limited and vehicles must enter via Bath Road.
