An attractive weather-boarded house in the heart of the Cheam Village conservation area. Whitehall has stood on this site since about 1500, and opened to the public in 1978. Originally a timber-framed wattle and daub building, the 18th century weather-boarding conceals several centuries of additions, including a 16th century staircase tower. The beautifully kept gardens are lovingly tended by members of our active Friends group, who also provide the home-made cakes in our cosy beamed tea-room. Changing programme of exhibitions and events. Whitehall was given a Gold Award in the 2011 Green Tourism Scheme for London in recognition of its efforts towards sustainability, which it successfully retained in 2013.

Join us for a trip around Croatia through wine, along with various cheeses and snacks. We will learn about how different flavours are developed and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Whitehall in summer.

Tudor Experience

Find out about local Tudors in this beautiful Tudor building. Children are encouraged to dress up. Age 7 - 11. Find out about Tudor Cheam, Cuddington and Nonsuch Palace. Visit the Lumley Chapel. Find out how the Tudors feasted and entertained themselves. Follow the trail around the house looking at the materials used to construct Tudor Whitehall. Find out about the use of herbs in food, dyeing and medicine. Look at local Tudor documents. The tour takes 2 hours, but can be extended to a whole day by adding a craft option (shield painting or making Tudor jewellery).

Whitehall Tour

A guided visit around an original Tudor house. The class will be divided into groups and taken on a guided tour. Handle replica Tudor objects, find out about the construction of Whitehall, and learn about Cheam village in the 16th century. Look at the Tudor kings and queens, particularly Henry VIII and Nonsuch Palace, and compare the lives of the rich and poor in Tudor times. The tour can be adapted to your curriculum needs, and takes 2 hours including visiting the shop. Price £2.00 per head.

A House Through Time

A look at the changes Whitehall has seen from medieval Cuddington to Second World War Cheam, in this 2 hour visit for children age 7 – 11. Who lived here before the building of Nonsuch Palace? Discover the Tudor period through wills, assize records and pictures, local religious conflict during the Civil War, and changes to the house during the Victorian period. Photos and documents show how life in Cheam was affected by the coming of the railway and the Second World War. This session can be extended to a whole day by adding a craft.
