The Museum tells the story of the Gunners – the 2.5 million men and women of the Royal Artillery, the part they have played in history and their role in today’s British Army. Tales of extraordinary heroism and endeavour are presented alongside explanations the technological and scientific advances driven by the development of artillery from Roman times to the present day. Special exhibitions, events and a great coffee shop make Firepower a great family destination.

Additional info

Firepower offers a first class learning experience, which can be tailored to meet the needs of many groups: schools (key stages 2, 3, and 4), further education, adult learning, special needs groups, and military historians.

An education resource has been developed and is available on request. This pack contains booking information for school visits, cross-curricular links and project ideas and exemplar worksheets for key stages 2-4.

Literacy and numeracy projects are being developed and will be available shortly.

If you are a teacher or student and have any comments or suggestions on what you would like to see happening please contact Bob Lindridge.

Teachers’ Packs and worksheets, information on the handling collection and outreach programme, will be downloadable from our website. Learning activities will be centred on term-time, after school and summer schools. Costumed interpreters can bring the exhibits to life. Facilities also exist for individual research using the extensive archives on site. As so many people have served as Gunners, the archive is a major family history resource as featured on BBC's Who Do You Think You Are?

The entire collection of the Museum of Artillery at the Rotunda is a Designated Collection of national importance.

An international collection of guns, rockets, missiles and vehicles spanning over 600 years of development worldwide. Including prototypes and models, it was used to teach cadets in the 18th century and has been displayed to the public since 1820 in the Museum of Artillery in the Rotunda.

In May 2001, much of the ordnance and all of the library and archive were moved to newly developed premises where they are more accessible to the public, fully interpreted and better preserved. The new development, called FIREPOWER, displays all of the collections of the Royal Regiment of Artillery together, with interactives and hands-on exhibits to explain the science of artillery. The historic Rotunda building houses the reserve collection and is open one day a week.

The collection of ordnance continues to expand as technology is constantly updated. The library and archive, in the James Clavell Library, provide an important research resource. These collections are supported by a wealth of artefacts, paintings and medals which tell the human story.
