The South Yorkshire Archaeology Service (SYAS) was established by the former South Yorkshire County Council in 1974. Since 1986 it has been maintained by the four districts of Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield and is administered by Sheffield City Council.
The primary role of the South Yorkshire Archaeology Service is to help protect and preserve our archaeological heritage, which forms part of our historic environment. SYAS provides advice on the management of archaeological sites to the Doncaster, Rotherham, Barnsley and Sheffield councils, as well as to developers, landowners, the Forestry Commission, and DEFRA, amongst others.
SYAS also promotes public understanding and appreciation of the historic environment. Each year we hold an Archaeology Day and produce an Archaeological Annual Review entitled ‘Archaeology in South Yorkshire’. SYAS also has links with local groups and societies with an interest in the archaeology and history of South Yorkshire.
