MADE is the regional architecture centre for the West Midlands and a Registered Charity. We engage people with places so they can influence the design of their local environments. We have a track record of using creative and innovative approaches which bring together local authorities, residents, artists and architects, schools and private developers to plan better places. We hold a Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge and were recently shortlisted for a Homes and Communities Agency Academy Award for 'Investing in Young People'. We are also an Arts Award Welcome organisation.

We support delivery of the Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment, through work experience and involving students in real-life projects. We engage students and teachers in designing Building Schools for the Future, Primary Capital Programme and Academies. We set up young people's design teams for capital projects, like new school buildings, outdoor learning areas, children's play areas, new housing developments and public parks.

Urban Explorers Resource Packs

This project helped Years 4 and 6 pupils to develop skills in observing, recording, documenting and presenting the built and natural environment around them. This free, downloadable resource pack supports Learning Outside the Classroom and Sustainability initiatives. It helps young people to question their environment and the people who create and maintain it; offers opportunities for interaction with urban design professionals; feeds into debate regarding current thinking on sustainable living and building; encourages an appreciation of urban biodiversity; and helps pupils to understand local distinctiveness.

Making Sense of Places

This website has mapped walks through Rugby, Dudley, Market Drayton, Ladywood and Tamworth, highlighting points of architectural and community interest. There are downloadable worksheets based on each walk: a Looking Guide, Critical Path Guide, Plant Hunter Guide, Curious Pedestrian Guide and Wardrobe Guide, all of which can be used to help explore other places.

Time Detectives

Script for a play in three acts connecting three periods in time: 1942, 1958, 1982. Starting with evacuess from the city to the town, Act One features rationing, collecting salvage and SPAM sandwiches. 1958 looks at the 11+, career options for boys and girls, Tarka the Otter, and tv. 1982 is FAME, BMX bikes and the first computers. Developed with Year 5 children in Walsall, it uses local place names which are easily adaptable to your own neighbourhood.
