The Public is an exciting creative community, cultural, and business space in the heart of West Bromwich.
The fantastic multi-use centre designed by world renowned architects Will Alsop and Julian Flannery, provides versatile spaces for people to get together for virtually any purpose – cultural and educational exhibitions, live performances, social relaxation, community activities and clubs and major corporate or entertainment events.
Throughout the year, visitors of all ages are treated to a jam-packed and fun-filled programme of entertaining workshops and activities to excite, delight, and amaze. Whether you’re interested in dance, art, music, graphics, photography or learning the tricks of the trade – you’ll find it at The Public!
If you're a fan of performing arts, The Public is a great venue to enjoy a live show or gig. Throughout the week a exciting array of live bands, from jazz to rock, motown to reggae, top comedians and enthralling theatrical performances entertain the crowds as they grace the stage. As well as showcasing a variety of nationally and internationally renowned artists, you'll be able to watch local enthusiasts demonstrating their creative talent at the inspiring art centre.
As well as a hosting a variety of events and activities, The Public is the perfect place to relax and watch the world go by. Grab a bite to eat at Couture, located on the ground floor of the building, and tuck in to a range of freshly-cooked hot meals, sandwiches and other snacks all sourced from local ingredients.

Heather and Ivan Morison
Two large kite sculptures, ‘The Opposite of All Those Things’ and 'Kind, Wise and Loving' residing in our gallery. Both structures are based on naturally occurring crystals which are designed to fly.
They were produced in collaboration with a Birmingham company specialising in the manufacture of three-dimensional kites.

MADE at The Public: What makes a good place?
An exhibition of photography by housing association residents from Birmingham and the Black Country which explores the nature of the built environment and the spaces we interact with.
Supported by the Skills Funding Agency, MADE is encouraging residents to get to know more about their neighbourhood and get involved in improving it.

Andy Day - Parkour Photography
The first solo exhibition by British photographer Andy Day. Since 2002 Day has documented the rise of parkour through its communities in London, France, Nicaragua and India.
Skills such as vaulting, rolling, swinging and wall scaling are employed. Parkour can be practiced anywhere, but areas dense with obstacles are preferable and it is most commonly practiced in urban areas.

John Wood and Paul Harrison 'Twenty Six (Drawing and Falling Things)'
nternationally renowned artists John Wood and Paul Harrison exhibiting their 2001 work, Twenty Six (Drawing and Falling Things).
Since 1993, Paul Harrison and John Wood, have been producing short films that investigate the relationship between the human body and architecture, and the tension that is created between the environment and its inhabitants.
Twenty Six (Drawing and Falling Things) consists of a series of twenty six short films, each between 20 seconds to 3 minutes in length, in which the artists use simple slapstick and concise artistic actions to explore rhythm and synergy within different surroundings.

Rick Davies’ Black Country Stories
Multistory has commissioned photographer Rick Davies to document the Black Country. Rick makes panoramic images that invite us to step into, and explore, the detail of the landscape in ways we might not have looked before.
Rick photographs the contemporary landscape to illustrate how geographical, historical, political and economic factors impact on individuals and society; he describes his work as being ‘A Visual Geography of the Post-industrial Landscape’.
Black Country Stories is a four year, multi-commission programme, produced by Multistory, that invites outstanding artists to document and record life in the Black Country.

Touch Interactive and Screening 2012
Submissions from across the UK to two unique open exhibitions for interactive artists and those working in film and video will be displayed on the gallery's touch screens.
The open exhibitions, provides a rare opportunity for artists from across the country and internationally to showcase their work alongside such distinguished artists.
Submissions to Screening 2012 include films about love in the Black Country and the monotony of unemployment. Fascinating films about food and its place in war also feature in the exhibition.

Will Alsop - A box of delights
World renowned architect, Will Alsop, is to return to The Public, a building he famously once described as ‘a box of delights’, as part of an exciting new exhibition launching this January.
‘A box of delights’, which forms part of The Public’s forthcoming Art of Architecture programme, has seen the Stirling prize winner work in collaboration with students from Birmingham City University architecture department, Walsall College interior design department, and Sheffield Hallam architecture course to create an environment designed to make us think about architecture and how it makes us feel.
