St John's College Old Library dates from the 1620s and includes the magnificent Upper Library, an inspiring setting for exhibitions and teaching sessions, and the backdrop to occasional films and documentaries. Its Reading Room draws visitors from all over the world.
The Working Library, intended primarily for members of St John's, opened in 1994, and its up-to-date facilities include WIFI and a well-equipped Seminar Room.
This library has a Designated Collection of national importance.

The Old Library collection is a Designated Collection of national importance, covering books, manuscripts, personal papers, photographs and artifacts. This collection of college alumni papers is a cohesive and meaningful collection.
The Old Library's special collections include medieval, illuminated, and post-medieval manuscripts, in particular theological, liturgical, medical, and literary works; early printed and rare books from 1466 to the twentieth century, covering the arts, humanities, and sciences; the personal papers of various alumni, with particular emphasis on mathematics and science; nineteenth- and twentieth-century photographs; prints and drawings; and some artefacts. The Working Library houses modern undergraduate and graduate texts, older research collections, and audio-visual materials.
