Leicester Print Workshop has a passion for printmaking.

They promote, sustain and advance fine art printmaking as a contemporary visual art form; as a craft; as a focus for exhibitions and commissions; in schools, with community groups, to artists and to the general public.

They make a creative impression and a meaningful contribution to visual arts in the Midlands.

Leicester Print Workshop was first established in 1986 and became a registered charity in 1993. They are an Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation (NPO).

Linocut Course

  • 14 March 2015 10am-4pm

Discover the versatility of this popular relief print technique. This course will introduce the basic skills of linocut from designing your image to cutting your block and printing. In addition you will have the opportunity to experiment with mark making, colour and collage.

A perfect course for beginners or those wishing to refresh their skills.

About the Tutor: Peter Clayton
Peter Clayton was brought up in rural Lancashire and studied Fine Art at Preston Polytechnic in Lancaster. He moved to Leicester in the 1980s. Alongside his art practice he teaches part-time at the University of Leicester’s Embrace Arts Centre, the Fosse Arts Centre and at a number of other colleges and art centres here in Leicester. He is a member of Leicester Print Workshop and Leicester Society of Artists.

EVENING ARCHITECTURE TALK: Takero Shimazaki

  • 16 March 2015 5:30-7pm

Join us at the Micro Cinema at Phoenix in Leicester for an evening talk by Takero Shimazaki, Director and lead architect of t-sa– the London based company we’ve been working with to transform our new St George St premises into a flagship for printmaking.

Takero graduated from the University of Wales, Cardiff (BSc) and The Bartlett School of Architecture, London. He has worked for the practices of Itsuko Hasegawa Atelier, Richard Rogers Partnership and Alison and Peter Smithson. He co-founded t-sa with Yuli Toh. He is currently a Intermediate 2 Unit Master at the Architectural Association, London.

Takero will be talking about his practice, his motivation and his interest and experience of LPW.

ARTIST TALK: Kate Da'Casto

Kate Da’Casto was Leicester Print Workshop’s Artist in Residence in 2014, where she nurtured her passion for etching, screenprinting, collage and digital print.

Based in Leicester, Kate is an artist with a multidisciplinary approach
her practice spans drawing, photography, printmaking, installation and sculpture. Join us for an informal evening of discussion and dialogue as Kate talks about her residency and making work.

Lithography course

  • 21 — 22 March 2015 10am-4pm

This weekend workshop will introduce participants to the various techniques of lithography. The course will include drawing and printing directly from stone, working on transfer paper, and a basic introduction to photo-plate lithography.

The course is suitable for artists new to the process, printmakers wishing to refresh their skills in the medium, or curators and collectors wishing to learn more about how artists’ lithographs are produced.

Introduction to Screenprint

A two day course for those that want to learn screen printing onto paper. This weekend course introduces the main principles of the technique. You will learn how to transfer an image to a silkscreen and print onto paper, in addition to exploring layering, colour, registration and stencils. Experiments with Textile Screenprinting

  • 4 — 6 April 2015

This three day course over the Easter weekend will include a full introduction to screenprinting onto textiles along with a range of techniques designed to develop your creative ideas, including: creating interlocking designs for repeat, using drawn and photographic imagery, heat press techniques, foiling, flocking and puff binder.

You will experiment with material and fabric manipulation to apply textured finishes and layered effects to your designs, creating samples and a length of fabric suitable for small furnishings. This 3 day course is suitable for beginners and established practitioners alike.

Print and make your own artist book

  • 11 — 12 April 2015 10am-4pm

Using Gum Arabic and the humble black and white photocopy as your plate, you will learn how to create prints of your photographic or hand drawn images.

Together with a variety of mixed media techniques such as using ink, oil pastel, bleach and acrylic learn how to create personal sketch book pages and artist books. An ideal workshop to kick start your creativity and experiment with print.

Solar Plate Course

  • 18 April 2015 10am-4pm

Solar Plate is a photo-etching process using photopolymer plates that are developed and ‘etched’ in water. A simple process that captures very fine detail and can produce beautiful prints from photographic or drawn imagery.

During this day course you will learn how to apply your design by exposing and developing the plate, then ink and print your own photo etchings.

Printmaking Special

Mezzotint Course

  • 9 May 2015 10am-4pm

The one day course will introduce you to the soft, subtle gradations of Mezzotint. Working with a ready rocked black plate you will use a tool called a burnisher to smooth away indentations to create light and tone. This process produces beautifully rich black prints with a characteristic dark, smoky quality.

Photoplate Lithography Course

An alternative to stone lithography, this process enables hand drawn, photographic or digital film positives to be transferred onto lithographic plate and printed on an etching press. You will be shown how to prepare imagery, expose and develop your plate, then ink and print. There will be the opportunity to work on two plates during the day, enabling you to experiment with different types of imagery and results.

Japanese Woodblock Printing Course

Japanese woodblock, or mokuhanga, is a printmaking technique that has a variety of beautiful effects, ranging from delicate washes of transparency, to bold vibrant colours.

ARTIST TALK: Maria Rosaria Digregorio

  • 2 June 2015 6-8pm

Saria Digregorio is Leicester Print Workshop’s Letterpress Apprentice. Saria is a designer and a typographer based in Nottingham. She trained at the Faculty of Architecture of the Polytechnic of Bari and in the department of Arts and Design of the IUAV University of Venice. She is co-editor of Progetto Grafico, the international graphic design magazine and co-founder of Zabar , an open group of designers focused on re-use and self-production, a homemade print studio and a self-publishing house. During the evening Saria will discuss her letterpress apprenticeship and the projects she has worked on during her time at Leicester Print Workshop.

Experimental linocuts

Our workshops at Lakeside Arts Centre run alongside the exhibitions at Djanogly Art Gallery and often take their inspiration from the artists and artwork on show.

Block Printed Lampshades

  • 20 — 21 June 2015 10am-4pm

During this one day course you will learn how to block print onto fabric and create your own beautiful, hand printed lampshade.

Using the linocut technique you will create a simple and effective block and print using fabric inks. You will experiment with a variety of repeat pattern techniques and create a length of fabric ready to construct a contemporary lampshade by hand. Each participant will go home with their very own lampshade ready to light up and admire.
