Bowood House and Gardens

Bowood House & Gardens

Bowood House & Gardens, located near Calne in Wiltshire, has been home to the Lansdowne family since 1754 and features what is regarded as one of 'Capability' Brown’s best-preserved parklands. It’s also considered to be one of the earliest examples of the legendary landscape designer’s fully-developed style. Enthusiastically marking this year’s Capability Brown Festival - celebrating the tercentenary of his birth - the 'Terrestrial Delights' exhibition (through to 31st October) in the House’s Orangery charts the development of the parkland in fascinating detail.

A Patriotic Peace - The 5th Marquess of Lansdowne and World War I

  • 28 March — 4 November 2018 *on now

In November 1917 Lord Lansdowne performed a remarkable act of political courage, one that saw him effectively excommunicated and branded a traitor.

What led a highly successful statesman and diplomat to publish the Peace Letter?

This special exhibition, drawn from the Bowood archives, explores the world and personal events that led Lord Lansdowne to publicly decry the mass slaughter in Europe and call for a negotiated peace with Germany. His aims were similar to those of President Woodrow Wilson of the United States of America, but, while President Wilson was celebrated for his efforts, Lord Lansdowne was vilified and forgotten by history.
