The SDSA has received a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to deliver a project to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of World War One. Working with partners, we have developed resources and activities that will enable young people, their families and community groups to engage with an important period in Leicester's past.

Shared Pasts, Shared Futures will help people to explore, record and preserve the culture and experiences of Leicester's inhabitants in the period leading up to and during WW1using oral history, archive footage, media resources and primary sources. Training and support are available.

Three Heritage Lottery Funded resource packs: 'A Soldier's Story' follows the life of Leicester man Alfred Burrows as he joins the Leicestershire Regiment and goes to fight on the Western Front; 'The Lives of Children' is a guide to what life was like for rich and poor children in the years leading up to 1914; and, 'Places of Interest' - a heritage trail that highlights places of interest in Leicester which have a wartime significance. A fourth pack, 'Research Guides', explains how individuals and groups can undertake their own research.
