ZSL Living Conservation

Founded in 1826, the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) is an international scientific, conservation and educational charity devoted to the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats.

ZSL runs ZSL London and ZSL Whipsnade Zoos, carries out scientific research in the Institute of Zoology and is actively involved in field conservation in over 40 countries worldwide. A registered charity (No. 208728), ZSL is dedicated to achieving and promoting the worldwide conservation of animals and their habitats.

Getting there

ZSL London Zoo

By Underground (Tube) / Overground: ZSL London Zoo is within walking distance of Camden Town and Regent's Park stations and short bus ride from Baker Street station. The nearest London Overground station is Camden Road station.

By National rail: The nearest mainline station is Euston. At Euston Station go to bus stop G and take bus number 253 towards the Narroway/Hackney Central to Camden High Street. At Camden High Street go to Stop T and take bus number 274 towards Victoria Gate to ZSL London Zoo.

By bus: Service number 274 runs from Marble Arch and Baker Street, to Ormonde Terrace. Pick up the C2 from Victoria station, Oxford Circus or Great Portland Street to Gloucester Gate.

By waterbus: The London Waterbus Company runs a scheduled service along the Regent's Canal between Camden Lock or Little Venice and ZSL London Zoo.

By car: We have extensive parking facilities, plus we're outside of the congestion charge.


ZSL Whipsnade Zoo

By car: Only 20 minutes from the M25 (junction 21), ZSL Whipsnade Zoo is signposted from the M1 (junction 9 and junction 12) and all major roads - just follow the elephant on the above map.

By bus: The park is now served by Centrebus route X31, linking Luton Central Station, Luton Centre, Dunstable and Hemel Hempstead (Centre and Rail Station) with the zoo. It runs approximately every 2 hours, Monday to Saturday (with some extra peak time buses). For more information please contact 0844 357 6520, info@centrebus.com.

By train: The nearest stations are Luton and Hemel Hempstead (both about 10 miles away from the Park).

Elephant Appreciation Week at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo

Allow our Discovery & Learning Officer to introduce our herd to your class! In our exciting Elephant Appreciate session, students will discover all things ele at our very own Asian Elephant arena. Students are brought through time, from Mammoths to present day, discovering who the closest relation to our Asian Elephants is. Students will compare Asian and African features and get up close to real elephant items from the natural world. Have you ever wondered what an elephant tooth is like to touch? Then join us for our very special week when our Elephants go centre stage.
Sessions available 15 – 19 September 2014.

Families 20 - 21 September 2014
Guaranteed to be a fun-filled educational day, visitors can join ZSL Whipsnade Zoo’s herd of Asian elephants on their stroll around the hilltop site, watch them take their daily bath or be astounded by the sheer amount of food our herd consume!

For a recommend donation visitors will also be able to have the chance to go on a behind-the-scenes tour of the elephant barn or meet one of the Zoo’s elephants and have their picture taken with them. All donations made on the day go towards vital elephant conservation and research projects.

There’ll be plenty to keep the whole family entertained with live music and traditional dance, and the chance to get creative in one of our hands-on craft workshops. Our ever popular Silent Elephant Art auction will be back too and Karishma the elephant is already busy painting her masterpieces as we speak!

History Tours at ZSL London Zoo

A visit to ZSL London Zoo is much more than just a walk around our fascinating exhibits; it’s a trip through time.

Our new history tour is a fantastic addition to a trip to ZSL London Zoo. Visitors will journey through the zoo with an experienced guide, hear stories of how ZSL helped inspire Charles Darwin’s ground-breaking work, follow the friendship of Winnie the Pooh and Christopher Robin, discover the history of the many Grade I and Grade II listed buildings at the zoo, and much more.

Tours will be conducted on the last Friday and Saturday of the month and advance bookings are essential. The program will begin with a welcome, followed by a 45 minute guided walking tour around the zoo. Visitors will then have the rest of the day to explore the immersive exhibits around zoo at their own pace.
