Drop Redoubt Tours 2015

  • 18 October 2015 11am-1pm, 2-4pm

The Western Heights in Dover is the largest Napoleonic fortifications in the UK. It is of vast historical, archaeological and architectural importance to the country.

There are two tours available on each day, one at 11am and another at 2pm. The tour looks at the Drop Redoubt, and discusses the significance and role of the Western Heights from its beginnings to the present day. The Grand Shaft is open on the same days; it does not form part of the tour.

Additional info

There are no toilets on site.

There is no charge for the tour, which lasts approximately two hours. The duration of the tour can prove a bit too long for younger visitors, so please think carefully before bringing children younger than 8 years old as it can be a bit too much for them. Younger children will have much more fun on our Open Days (May 30th and 31st and September 12th and 13th), when they can see the displays and the re-enactors and enjoy all the noise that goes with firing muskets and take part in drills!

If you wish to book onto one of the tours, please e-mail us with the number of places you wish to reserve and the date and time of the tour you wish to book onto. Please be aware that places are strictly limited to 20 per tour, so booking early to avoid disappointment is strongly advised.

Please note: There are many stairs within the fort as well as uneven surfaces; unfortunately this makes it inaccessible to wheelchairs and pushchairs.

To book a place on the tours, please fill in the form on the webpage with your details and preferred tour date and time.

If you wish to arrange for a visit for a student, scout or special interest group. Please email either Mandy Whall (mandywhall@doverwesternheights.org) or Tracey Stewart (tracystewart@doverwesternheights.org) directly.
