The Drop Redoubt together with the Western Heights, forms the largest Napoleonic fortress in Britain. They are an excellent example of British defence from the Napoleonic period right through to the Second World War.

Grand Sharft Staircase

The Grand Shaft (Western Heights Dover)

  • 18 October 2015 10am-5pm

The Grand Shaft is a unique structure in the Western Heights and a very rare example of a triple spiral staircase in fortifications of the same age (early 1800s).

On the third Sunday of the month between April and October, the Grand Shaft will be open free of charge for the public to visit. It will also be the Western Heights Preservation Society’s open weekends.

Come and join us on the Western Heights for a weekend of history and fun.

The 4th Battalion Royal Foot Artillery will cannon firing. Also, 1st Footguards, 79th Cameron Highlanders, 71st Highland Light Infantry and French 45eme.

There are plenty of activities for the children, including parade drilling and workshops.

The Grand Shaft will be open all weekend.

Car parking: Citadel sports field and North Entrance car park.
Train: Short walk from Dover Priory. Train journey time is only 1 hour 15 minutes from London.
Bus: Route 93 (Regent Coaches)
