Škampa Quartet 1

  • 1 August 2016 8-9:45pm

Two classical masterpieces bookend Kodály's strikingly original WW1 quartet in the first of two concerts by the great Czech quartet.
With Mozart, his music rarely mirrors his personal circumstances at the time... Beethoven is not one such: the remarkable slow movement at the heart of Op.132 is headed 'Hymn of thanksgiving from one who has recovered from an illness', for which we must all be truly thankful.

  • 3 August 2016 12-1:30pm

Later this year this popular husband and wife duo celebrate their 40th anniversary as a duo. Debussy's 1917 Sonata, his last completed work, continues our WW1 commemorations; if its middle movement conveys the characteristics of commedia dell arte's Pierrot, Stravinsky continues in this vein in his first great neoclassical work.

Chilingirian Quartet 1 Garfield Jackson VIOLA*

  • 8 August 2016 8-9:30pm

In the first of the Chilis two concerts (see also Fri 12th) we continue our 'Mozart Quartets Plus' strand and bring another work from the glorious year of 1788 (see also the Mozart piano trios on Thu 4th and Sun 7th). The central work is a rarity unearthed by Levon Chilingirian: the British composer Edgar Bainton wrote his A major Quartet in 1919 following his wartime experiences in the Ruhleben internment camp, where his colleagues and compatriots included Benjamin Dale, featured in last year's festival.
We dedicate this concert to the memory of Derrick Johnson, a long-time supporter of LDSM and a member of the Council of Management under Keith Scott.

Chloë Hanslip VIOLIN Danny Driver PIANO

  • 8 August 2016 11am-12:30pm

Chloë Hanslip makes her eagerly-awaited LDSM début and brings the music of Bloch to the festival for the first time – the 1920 sonata was his personal response to the horrors of WW1. Here it rubs shoulders with Prokofiev's work of the same year. Another first goes back 200 years to Bach, with the first true duo sonata.
This concert is dedicated to the memory of Keith Scott, who not only played a key part in the foundation of LDSM, and served as Chairman for many years, but also supported Chloë in the funding for her remarkable 1737 Guarneri del Gesu violin.

The Battle of the Somme, with Jan Bradley PERCUSSION

  • 9 August 2016 7:30-9pm

This year, Imperial War Museums (IWM) and the First World War Centenary Partnership, of which LDSM is a member, are working together to show the UNESCO-listed film The Battle of the Somme (77') to audiences across the world. Shot and screened in 1916, it was the first feature-length documentary about war and changed the way both cinema and film was perceived by the public. In the year of its release, around 20 million people (almost half the population of Britain at the time) watched The Battle of the Somme, many hoping to see the image of a loved-one or friend captured on film. One hundred years later, this unique film from IWM's collection is being shown to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.
Exclusively for LDSM, the composer and percussionist Jan Bradley will improvise a soundtrack live for our screening. Last year Jan wrote a piece setting texts by 3 WW1 female poets for his percussion ensemble 4-MALITY and singer, which was so successful (the LDSM première was chosen as one of the new music highlights of the year by a leading critic) that Jan was a natural choice of artist to accompany this remarkable film.

Christoph Richter CELLO Yuko Inoue VIOLA Andrew Dunlop PIANO*

  • 11 August 2016 7:30-9:15pm

The combination of viola and cello is rarely heard but has attracted not only viola-playing composers such as Rebecca Clarke, whose WW1 piece we hear, and Beethoven – but looking further east to Glière's pre-WW1 work and Lutosławski. Each instrument also has its moment in the twilight with masterpieces by Bach and Brahms.

Candlelight Serenade at LDSM hi res photo by Colin Reynolds.jpg

Candlelight Serenade

  • 12 August 2016 8-9:30pm

This is your opportunity to hear musicians destined for great careers in this culmination of the intense work between the ISMA Artists and their tutors in the last twelve days.
Solos, duos and some of the greatest chamber works of the classical repertoire bring the festival to a close in a spectacular fusion of sound and lighting with a programme reflecting our themes and anniversaries, to include Schoenberg's Verklärte Nacht (30')… may our night be transfigured by this moving work, in its 1917 version for string orchestra.
A unique event not to be missed.

Chilingirian Quartet 2 Yuko Inoue VIOLA‡ Christoph Richter CELLO‡ Alastair McMath DOUBLE BASS*

  • 12 August 2016 11am-12:30pm

Our 'Mozart Quartets Plus' strand concludes with a sextet arrangement of the great Sinfonia Concertante, with Levon Chilingirian and Susie Mészáros taking the solo parts. Dvořák rarities preface Bartók's work – save for a brief period in Dvořák's home land, Bartók was unable to continue his folk music collecting due to the war, and the Quartet's slow gestation from 1915 to 1917 only intensified the composer's drawing on past folk influences.
