This area has a rich mining history. The date of the earliest mines is unknown, while the last coal mine closed as recently as 1963. Other open cast mining continued later than this. There are still many reminders of our mining heritage throughout the area.
The South Gloucestershire Mines Research Group was set up by local people to understand, record and – where appropriate – preserve what remains of the once extensive mining industry in the area.
There is a quarterly newsletter, and regular meetings with visiting speakers. The group also organises research initiatives, digs, restoration work, country walks, and local talks to the community groups.
