Andrew Carnie – Dark Garden: Heard With A Different Voice

  • 16 January — 27 February 2016 *on now

Autism is a strangely bewitching medical condition. Little understood as yet, it can be characterised by an inability to understand social interactions, and can be accompanied by extraordinary talents such as memory feats, musical ability, or computational skills, but more often the sufferer has a tendency to engage in repetitive actions, be very sensitive to sensory inputs and to be stuck in an isolated world disconnected from social reality.

The piece on display in the Allsop is time-based and involves a 35mm slide projection onto three layers of voile screen. In a darkened space layered images appear and disappear
the developing display absorbing the viewer into an expanded sense of space and time through the slowly unfolding narratives that evolve before and around them. Dark Garden is accompanied by a four channel sound piece by sound artists Matt Grover and Steve Bayley working with Andrew Carnie

The work on display is a response to the work being done to unpick the condition scientifically by Prof. Francesca Happe and Prof. Utah Frith and their research teams, at King’s College London and the Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience University College London.

The project was funded and supported by the Norwegian Mental Health Council and the Science Museum Oslo and the Arts Council England for the sound track. The work has been shown at the Science Museum, Oslo, Norway and at 10 Days in Winchester, UK.

There will be examples of Andrew Carnie’s drawing practice in the Foyer Gallery.

Exhibition on Screen: Renoir - Reviled and Revered

  • 16 February 2016 From 7:30pm

He is one of the most fiercely debated artists and yet one of the most influential. Picasso collected more Renoirs than any other artist. Matisse revered him. Monet too. He was an artist that was instrumental in creating the Impressionist movement and then totally rejected it and went in a completely new direction – with extraordinary results.

The Barnes Collection in Philadelphia has more Renoirs than any other gallery in the world and it’s there that the search begins to tell the remarkable story of this remarkable artist.

Exhibition on Screen: Monet to Matisse

  • 19 April 2016 From 7:30pm

Claude Monet was an avid horticulturist and arguably the most important painter of gardens in the history of art, but he was not alone. Great artists like Van Gogh, Bonnard, Sorolla, Sargent, Pissarro and Matisse all saw the garden as a powerful subject for their art. These great artists, along with many other famous names, feature in an innovative and extensive exhibition from The Cleveland Museum of Art and The Royal Academy, London.

Guided by passionate curators, artists and garden enthusiasts, this remarkable collection of Impressionists, Post-Impressionists, and avant-garde artists of the early twentieth century will reveal the rise of the modern garden in popular culture and the public’s enduring facination with gardens today.
