Halifax Great War Heritage Society

The Halifax Great War Heritage Society researches the history, culture, and everyday stories of Calderdale during the time of the First World War.

Facilities at The Old Mill include the Estaminet where members work on the local newspaper database, and on plans for walking trails featuring locations connected with the war.

The Society organises a series of monthly evening talks with both guest speakers and members presenting information about the Great War.

Admission charges

Membership of the Society is free. There is a charge of £2 for evening meetings which includes refreshments. If attending for the first time, please ring the venue to reserve seats.

Getting there

From central Halifax follow the signs for Boothtown / Queensbury / Bankfield Museum. After passing the museum on the right, continue past Rawson School on the left. Hall Street North is a narrow left turn about 300 yards further up the A647.

Join our team of researchers working on stories about life in Calderdale during the First World War. On Monday mornings, a small group works on reading & recording the newspapers (usually the Halifax Courier) of the 1914-1919 period. On Thursdays, we have another group similarly occupied at the Halifax Reference Library. Training is provided as appropriate.
