Feelgood Theatre Productions are a multi award winning theatre company founded in 1994. They produce world class theatre with a definite sense of risk and adventure at national and international site specific and traditional venues; each production offering pioneering community and education programmes.

The play Not About Heroes by Stephen MacDonald, directed by Caroline Clegg will tour to Craiglockhart War Hospital (Edinburgh) then the UK after its premier at the Imperial War Museum London on 4th August 2014.

During WWI, Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen, two of England’s greatest twentieth century poets met in Craiglockhart War Hospital. Siegfried, a decorated war hero was hospitalized after protesting against the continuing war; Wilfred was a victim of shell shock and accused of cowardice. Upon returning to the front, Sassoon was shot in the head, but survived. Owen went on to win the Military Cross and die in the trenches seven days before the Armistice. This play tells their story.
On this unique anniversary this play is far more than a historical glimpse of events. It is an exploration of a soldiers courage, of humanity and a moving celebration of an intense friendship forged through poetry and the power of words overshadowed by a terrible and all-consuming war. This play inspires all who see it, especially young people.

Running parallel to the play at each venue there will be an education programme and a unique poetry competition to find the 'voices' of the 21st century from serving, ex serving military personnel and their families. A substantial prize will be offered and the selected work will be presented on a dedicated website and in a commemorative publication as a real and lasting legacy.

PLAY - Not About Heroes by Stephen MacDonald - TRAFALGAR STUDIOS

  • 11 November — 6 December 2014 *on now

On this unique occasion of the 100th anniversary of the First World War, the award-winning company Feelgood present Stephen MacDonald’s beautiful and inspirational must-see play.

Not About Heroes is a timeless and uncompromising exploration of courage, of humanity and an intense friendship forged through poetry and the power of words.
During the First World War, two of England’s greatest twentieth-century war poets met at Craiglockhart War Hospital. Siegfried Sassoon was a decorated war hero hospitalised after protesting against the continuing conflict. Wilfred Owen was a victim of shell shock and accused of cowardice. Returning to the front, Sassoon was shot in the head but survived. Owen went on to win the military cross, but die in the trenches on the 4th November, his mother only receiving word on the 11th as the Armistice bells rang out.
Weaving together their letters, autobiographical writings and poetry, including; Anthem for Doomed Youth, Mental Cases, Strange Meeting, Futility, Exposure and The Dead Beat, this emotionally powerful and often witty piece of theatre tells the story of the friendship that transformed them.

Following Feelgood’s critically acclaimed 2007 tour and West End run, this brilliant new production will delight audiences. Premiering at Craiglockhart and touring across the UK to significant venues in the poet’s life, with a special performance at the Forrester’s House in Ors, France, before the West End.

A full education programme and Whispers of War Poetry Competition parallels this work.
